Around 3,000 Aldabra giant tortoises, empty beaches, very few villas. Why we recommend Frégate when guests want to experience an island rather than merely stay on it.

There are islands that are backdrops. You stay in a villa, go to the beach, and the island behind you could just as well be another one. Frégate is the opposite. The island is the reason you go.

## The tortoises

Frégate is home to around 3,000 free-roaming Aldabra giant tortoises. They stand at the edge of the path, graze beside the beach and let no one disturb them. At Anse Victorin, a broad beach where no one else is in view, good snorkelling begins just 15 metres offshore. That is the moment we describe to guests who ask what is special: a beach, tortoises nearby, and not a person in sight.

## The conservation project

The island is a conservation project. The nature team explains the reintroduction of endemic species such as the Seychelles magpie robin, brought back here from the edge of extinction, and from October to January monitors hawksbill and green turtle nests. Guests join if they want to. Many do.

## The marina

Frégate has its own small marina with sailing craft and a PADI dive centre. The surrounding reefs are reached without a long transfer. Those looking for both, beach and nature, find them here in a small space: granite, forest, reef and empty coves.

## When

April, May, October and November are the transition months with calm seas and little wind. Those who want to see the turtle nests plan for October to January. Frégate is a rare address and its few villas go early; anyone set on a particular week talks to us well in advance.
