Our Assessment

Why we recommend andBeyond Vira Vira.

A working hacienda at the foot of an active volcano: the most considered way to experience Patagonia without sacrificing comfort.

We know the property personally. Vira Vira is not a resort for passive rest. It is designed for guests who want to engage with the landscape. It begins with you: tell us one or two anchor experiences (volcano summit, fly-fishing) and we plan the week around them. The all-inclusive model with no activity surcharges removes every budget constraint from the holiday.

Best season
December to March for summer experiences (fly-fishing, rafting, volcano treks). June to August for snowshoeing and skiing on Villarrica glacier: an entirely different property in winter.

Travellers who want active nature immersion and lodge comfort in the same stay. Particularly for fly-fishers, mountain trekkers, and those seeking South America off the postcard routes.

Fly-fishing on the Liucura in the morning with a local guide who has known these currents for decades; a sundowner picnic on the highland pasture in the evening as Villarrica sends smoke into the golden sky.

  • Villarrica Volcano is visible from every suite and villa: an active volcano as a constant, living backdrop, not a postcard scene behind a fence.
  • All activities are fully included: fly-fishing, white-water rafting, volcano trekking, helicopter flight over the crater, snowshoeing, with no per-activity billing.
  • The lodge farms its own organic land; approximately eighty per cent of kitchen produce is grown on the estate, and dinner begins in the vegetable garden.
  • Mapuche cultural programmes, herbal medicine walks, weaving sessions, storytelling evenings, are run with local families rather than staged as folklore.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Fly fishing on the Liucura

Catch-and-release on the Liucura with a local guide who has read the current for years. One fishing excursion is included in the stay.

  2. Mapuche cultural visit

Guided encounters with local Mapuche families, from herbal medicine to weaving. Set up as a genuine exchange, not a folklore show.

  3. Whitewater rafting and mountain treks

Rafting on the region's rivers, plus hikes and rides at the foot of Villarrica. All activities are included without separate billing.

  4. Farm and cheese-factory tour

A walk through the working hacienda with organic garden and its own cheese factory; about eighty percent of ingredients come from the estate. Dinner starts in the garden.

Local Experiences

What shapes the stay.

  • Huerquehue National Park: ancient araucaria forest with high-altitude lakes. Two hours of hiking, one of the finest half-day excursions in the Chilean Lake District.
  • Termas Geométricas near Coñaripe: twenty-one thermal pools set in a narrow gorge, accessible only via a timber walkway. 45 minutes by car, an ideal contrast after a physical day.
  • Curarrehue market: Mapuche market with handmade textiles, dried fruits and local wines. Saturdays, around 30 minutes towards the Argentine border.

Sir Bani Yas is the most coherent way to experience wildlife in the Arabian Peninsula: an island established as a nature reserve in the 1970s, home to giraffes, gazelles and Arabian oryx, minutes from the water.

Best season October to April. The Arabian summer (May to September) is climatically demanding; the cooler months offer comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities and beach time.

andBeyond Bateleur Camp

Bateleur Camp sits at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment on the western edge of the Maasai Mara, where andBeyond's private concession gives guests access to terrain that vehicles from the central reserve cannot reach. The camp has been substantially refurbished and carries a nostalgic safari aesthetic that is neither museum nor caricature.

Best season July to October: the Great Migration with wildebeest river crossings at the Mara. January to March: calving season, quieter, lower rates. Avoid April/May (long rains).
