Best time to travel May to September for beach and tidal flats, April or October for quiet days, winter for the spa.

Sylt sits in the bracing North Sea climate: salt air, steady wind and fast-changing light. Summers stay mild, rarely above 22 °C, with sea temperatures around 17 to 20 °C in July and August. Autumn brings rising winds and storms, spring offers clear air and empty beaches. The cold months suit dining and spa rather than long days by the water.

  • June to August Warmest stretch, long days, water around 17 to 20 °C, but also the island's busiest season.
  • April, May, September, October Quiet shoulder months with clear light and fewer guests; expect wind and cooler days.
  • November to March Stormy and wet, often single-digit temperatures; good for the kitchen, sauna and walks, not the beach.

What you come here for.

  1. Mudflat walk on Sylt's Wadden side

    At low tide you can explore the tidal flats behind the island on foot, ideally with a local guide and an eye on the tide times.

  2. An evening in the hotel kitchen

    The hotel is built around its cooking; a long dinner of northern German produce is more reason to travel here than side programme.

  3. A walk in Sylt's light

    A windy stroll along the west beach before or after a meal is part of the rhythm here, especially calm in spring and autumn.

  4. Spa and rest day in poor weather

    On grey days the stay moves indoors: sauna, pool and lounge make the cooler months worthwhile too.
