Best time to travel May to November

The southern winter from May to November brings dry, milder days in the mid-20s and calmer conditions. Cyclone season runs from mid-November to mid-May, with the highest risk from January to March; those months are hot, humid and most likely to affect the east coast.

  • May–November Dry trade-wind season with pleasant temperatures; July is the coolest month and the east coast can be windy.
  • December–March Hot and humid around 30 degrees; the main window for possible cyclones, especially on the east coast.
  • April / November Shoulder months: warm, mostly calm, with lower storm risk than midsummer.

    The expansive Nira Spa works with an in-house Ayurvedic doctor and combines classic treatments with yoga, watsu and hydrotherapy. Suited to a single treatment as much as a multi-day programme.

  2. The rum collection at the Rum Shed

    The Rum Shed bar holds one of the Indian Ocean's largest rum collections; a tasting fits the character of this sugar-cane south coast.

  3. Snorkelling the Coral Garden in the south lagoon

    The Coral Garden, a dedicated snorkelling site in the sheltered south lagoon, lies just off the resort and is reached as part of the non-motorised watersports.

  4. Yoga at the infinity pool in golden light

    In the early evening, yoga takes place at the infinity pool while the lagoon turns warm and gold, in the same resort as the morning Ayurveda treatment.

What shapes the stay.

  • Bras d'Eau National Park in the north-east: tropical wet forest with endemic species, around 90 minutes by car, worth a half-day.
  • Gris Gris cliffs at the southern tip: raw basalt coastline, crashing surf, no tourist infrastructure; 20 minutes by car.
  • Saint Aubin rum distillery: historic colonial plantation with guided tour and lunch on the veranda, 15 minutes away, tonally in keeping with the character of the hotel.
